 More Travel Images

by William Lulow

As a photographer who has basically devoted his life to making images, when I am on vacation, I always struggle to use the time I have effectively to make the kinds of pictures I tend to think about often. I am always intent on making dramatic images of places I visit. When you are touring you don’t have the luxury of being able to see a place under different lighting conditions, weather conditions and from differing points-of-view. So you need to make assessments of what is in front of your eyes and determine what you want to say about it. Here are a couple of pictures I shot recently on the island of Maui. I was looking to capture its beauty and some drama.

Here, trying to use a splash of color to draw attention to the perfect weather on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Another one, shot in original Black&White, also attempting to make a dramatic statement:

In this photograph, the white waves washing up on the shore, the dark sky (made with the addition of a #25A red filter) and the arching trees make the image a dramatic one. And still, another image:

I am always trying to make dramatic images when I am traveling. As I have said, it’s impossible to wait at one location to see the light change. It is hard enough, when you are seeing the sights, to get up early for a sunrise after touring and walking around all day! You usually want to get some rest to prepare for the next day.

On this particular trip to Hawaii, I have missed several opportunities for certain pictures. But, this is a vacation and not an assignment. And especially when you are traveling with others, it’s not always easy to get to the places you want when you want. I’m not sure if or when I might return to Hawaii, but I have certainly loved every minute of this vacation. So, I do the best I can when it comes to making pictures. Here are a couple more:

What travelogue about Hawaii would be complete without at least one shot of a surfer? (Made with my 135mm lens mounted on a tripod. Exposure was 1/125th of a second at f/20. Probably needed a faster shutter speed to really stop his action. Only had time for a few shots though.)

So, when traveling and not on an actual assignment, we need to slow down the fast pace of tourism and try to concentrate, at least for a short time, on what makes great images.
