Examples of Hollywood Lighting

As I mentioned in an earlier blog, the Hollywood Lighting is the one I usually begin with for most portraits. I usually use a large, white umbrella into which I bounce my mainlight flash in order to achieve a “soft” effect.

Sometimes, I want to make a dramatic portrait. In that case, I don’t use the umbrella, but just use the flash head with a reflector and aim it directly at the subject. This creates a very stark effect like the one below:

These images were created using the large, white umbrella as a mainlight. It is placed in the same position as the Hollywood lighting. The only difference is the quality of the light.
